Istanbul symposium urges modern relevance of Prophet Muhammad’s teachings

An international symposium in Istanbul has called for the principles of mercy and justice associated with Prophet Muhammad to play a greater role in contemporary life, while urging stronger Islamic scholarship and more reliable religious content online.

The symposium, organized by Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs, or Diyanet, concluded Thursday as part of events marking Mawlid al-Nabi Week. Diyanet President Safi Arpaguş chaired the meeting.

A final declaration issued after the symposium identified the Quranic description of Prophet Muhammad as a “mercy to the worlds” as a central theme of discussions.

The declaration said mercy was reflected not only in the Prophet’s personal conduct but also in the religious, moral and social order he conveyed. It said his approach to justice did not distinguish between people on the basis of lineage, status or personal connections.

The declaration called for commemorations of the 1,500th anniversary of the Prophet’s birth to go beyond ceremonies and help translate these principles into contemporary life.

Focus on family and young people

The symposium examined the Prophet’s approach to education, family and youth, emphasizing the connection between worship and morality.

The declaration described his conduct as a husband and father as a model for compassion, justice and responsibility within the family. It also said domestic violence had no legitimate basis in the Prophet’s practices or in Islamic family law.

It highlighted the Prophet’s practice of entrusting young companions with responsibility, saying this could offer guidance in addressing young people’s concerns about the future and their search for meaning.

Calls for contemporary interpretation

Participants also examined the Prophet’s different roles as a human being, head of state and military commander.

The declaration called for contemporary interpretations of his life and teachings to draw on established Islamic disciplines, particularly hadith methodology and studies of his life.

It also recommended reviewing the understanding of the Prophet presented through religious services, including Friday sermons, according to these principles.

Humanitarian issues and ethics of war

The symposium addressed humanitarian crises in Myanmar, East Turkistan and Gaza through the framework of Islamic teachings on warfare.

The declaration cited prohibitions attributed to Prophet Muhammad against killing women, children and elderly people, as well as mutilation and violations of agreements.

It said attacks on civilians, obstruction of humanitarian assistance and restrictions on freedom of belief were incompatible with these principles and with broader humanitarian values.

The declaration also cited the protection of life, property and honor emphasized in the Prophet’s Farewell Sermon as a standard against human rights violations.

Concern over online misinformation

The symposium raised concerns about fabricated narrations and statements of uncertain origin circulating on social media.

The declaration said artificial intelligence could expand access to information but could not replace scholarly judgment when assessing the authenticity and context of religious reports or drawing religious conclusions.

It called for closer cooperation between studies of the Prophet’s life and Sunnah and disciplines including education, psychology, law and economics.

The recommendations also included greater support for young researchers, more research based on authentic sources in Western languages, stronger cooperation with Muslim scholars abroad and the production of reliable digital religious content.

The declaration further called for scholarly oversight of AI applications dealing with Islamic teachings and for the symposium’s findings on family, youth and education to be reflected in sermons and other forms of religious guidance.
