The 450-year-old Selimiye Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and described by Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan as his “masterpiece,” will reopen at full worship capacity on the first day of Ramadan following the most extensive restoration in its history.

The project, launched in November 2021 under academic supervision and led by Türkiye’s General Directorate of Foundations, adopted a comprehensive conservation approach examining the structure as a whole rather than addressing isolated damage. Although the mosque remained partially open during the works, worshippers will now fully return to the historic complex as final exterior details continue.

Officials said the restoration focused first on structural reinforcement, including strengthening the main dome and renewing its traditional lead covering. Similar work was carried out on the courtyard domes, while incompatible cement-based additions from earlier repairs were removed. Windows were renewed, original wooden elements restored, and modern glass and plexiglass installations from a 1983 intervention replaced with historically appropriate materials.

Inspections identified the mosque’s four 85-meter minarets—known for their rare triple-balcony and triple-staircase design—as the most vulnerable elements. Reinforcement and maintenance have now been completed without altering their historic appearance.

Decorative works, including painted ornamentation and plaster details in the prayer hall and courtyard, have been finalized. A newly woven carpet based on the original design has also been installed, while landscaping and tile cleaning are in their final stages.

Authorities said decisions regarding dome ornamentation were made in line with UNESCO conservation standards, preserving the registered decorative scheme following academic consultations.

An official inauguration ceremony is planned once all remaining works are completed.
