Greece earthquake prompts warning over fault strain
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near Greece’s Evia island on Friday, prompting Turkish geoscientist Professor Naci Görür to warn of strain along the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault in both Greece and the Marmara region.
Tremor recorded at shallow depth
The earthquake occurred at 9:42 a.m. Türkiye time at a depth of 5.46 kilometers, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, known as AFAD.
No damage or other adverse effects were initially reported.
Fault extends into Marmara region
Görür said the earthquake occurred within the zone of the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault, which also extends through the Marmara region, including Istanbul and surrounding areas.
He said the fault branch is under strain in both the Marmara region and Greece, urging attention to seismic activity along the system.
