Tottenham sacks Ange Postecoglou despite historic Europa League victory

In a surprising move, English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur has announced the dismissal of its manager Ange Postecoglou, just two weeks after the Greek-Australian coach led the team to a historic Europa League triumph.
The 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the final held in Bilbao marked Tottenham’s first major title in 17 years and secured their return to the UEFA Champions League. Despite this success, the club cited a deeply disappointing domestic campaign as the reason for the decision.
Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League, narrowly avoiding relegation after losing 22 of their 38 league matches. In an official statement, the club's board said the decision was made unanimously, emphasizing that leadership changes were essential to secure the club’s long-term goals.
Postecoglou, who took charge in June 2023 after a successful spell at Celtic, was the first Greek-Australian to manage a Premier League team. His dismissal comes exactly two years to the day after his appointment.
While the board praised the Europa League win as "one of the club's greatest moments," it stressed that recent performance trends could not be ignored, citing only 78 points earned from the last 66 league fixtures.
Speaking at a recent victory parade, Postecoglou expressed his desire to stay, telling supporters: “Season three is better than season two.”
Reports indicate that Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva are under serious consideration to replace him.
