Sports violence lands over 150 hooligans in the dock

A prosecutor has recommended that more than 150 individuals, including top Olympiacos FC executives, stand trial for alleged involvement in a criminal organization linked to violent hooliganism.
Prosecutor Magdalini Kalpakidou’s report describes an “operationally structured and active organization” under the name “Gate 7,” accused of orchestrating felonies and misdemeanors tied to sports events. The group allegedly used violence to intimidate rival fans, police and referees.
The indictment also seeks trial for six individuals accused of orchestrating the fatal attack on police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in December, 2023, while 117 others face charges of aiding the primary assailant. The same proposal seeks the indictment of Olympiacos President Evangelos Marinakis, Piraeus Mayor Yiannis Moralis, and other club executives for inciting sports violence and supporting a criminal organization.
Kalpakidou claims they provided financial backing to the group’s leaders despite knowing its criminal nature. A judicial council will determine whether the case proceeds to trial.
