Beşiktaş targeted by racist banner from Greek fans in BKT European Cup match
During Beşiktaş’s away game against Greek side Panionios in the BKT European Cup, fans of the home team displayed a banner containing racist and offensive messages aimed at both Beşiktaş and the Turkish police. The banner, written in Turkish, sparked widespread condemnation.
Beşiktaş JK strongly denounced the incident, calling it a “vile and provocative attack” targeting the club, its supporters, the Turkish Police, and national values. The club emphasized that such acts of hatred and racism violate the unifying spirit of sport and announced that it has initiated legal and administrative action through EuroLeague authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
This is not the first time Turkish teams have faced racist provocations abroad.
Last November, Fenerbahçe Beko was targeted with a controversial banner during a EuroLeague match in Serbia, and its football team faced a similar incident in a UEFA Europa League game against Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic. In both cases, the fines and sanctions imposed by the governing bodies were widely criticized as insufficient to prevent future incidents.
