Two pilots killed as Greek military jet crashes during air show

The aircraft crashed shortly before 3 p.m. local time, with thousands of spectators watching the aerial demonstration. Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the jet suddenly began losing altitude before hitting the ground, followed by an explosion.

The aircraft belonged to the 117th Combat Wing, based in Andravida, and was being flown by a captain and a lieutenant colonel, according to Greek daily To Vima.

Crash witnessed by thousands

The incident occurred only minutes after the Greek Air Force demonstration began. A firefighting helicopter was deployed to extinguish fires that broke out following the crash.

Initial reports indicated that the aircraft broke into two sections, with fires reported at two separate locations at the crash site.

The two pilots were later confirmed dead. It was not immediately clear whether the aircraft's ejection-seat system had been activated.

Investigation launched

An air accident investigation committee has begun examining the circumstances of the crash.

Investigators are expected to review footage recorded by cameras at the event venue, as well as communications between the aircraft crew and the control tower. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The Greek F-4 Phantom II fleet is expected to be retired by the end of the decade, according to To Vima.

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has declared a three-day mourning period in the Armed Forces through September 7.
