Tsipras to announce new party on May 26
The announcement was made in a video posted on his Instagram account: “Neither early nor late – the time is now,” the video announced, showing the backs of two young boys in a stadium with the numbers 26 and 5 displayed on their football jerseys.
Earlier this month, Tsipras presented a lengthy political manifesto on how the Left could return to government in Greece, drafted by a working group in his Alexis Tsipras Institute, focused on “bringing together the three chief tendencies in the contemporary Left: Social Democrats, the Radical Left and Greens.”
Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum in April, Tsipras said he could not remain in “comfortable silence” and had a responsibility to help restore “stability and normality” in Greece. Outlining the broad direction of the new party, he called for a “governing left” focused on practical solutions rather than dissent.
He argued that Greece must shift away from a real estate-driven economy toward a more productive model, proposing the creation of a national convergence fund to support investment.
He said he is not interested in leading a party with a “complementary role,” but in reshaping policy direction.
