Snow and freezing temperatures put Northern Greece on Red Alert

Northern Greece remained on red alert on Thursday as heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures disrupted daily life across the region.

Western Macedonia has been under alert since Wednesday, with snow reported in Serres, Kilkis, Nevrokopi, Florina and parts of Drama, while sleet affected areas including Thessaloniki, Pella, Kavala and Kilkis. Temperatures fell as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius in Nevrokopi, Volakas and Paranesti early Thursday, according to official data.

Police imposed temporary bans on heavy goods vehicles on several road sections in Western Macedonia, while snow chains were made mandatory on parts of the road network. School schedules were also adjusted, with schools closed in the municipality of Servion and delayed openings in Florina and Kastoria.
