Sheep and goat pox outbreak continues unabated in İskeçe
The outbreak of sheep and goat pox in Greece continues, with three of the 52 new cases reported last week detected in İskeçe and four in Rhodope, according to updated data released by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the National Scientific Committee for the Management and Control of Sheep and Goat Pox.
Current Situation
From August 2024 to 23 November 2025, official records show:
1,754 confirmed cases of sheep and goat pox nationwide
2,192 affected farms across the country
423,125 animals culled under official health protocols
For the week of 17–23 November 2025, 52 new cases were reported across 14 regional units, based on laboratory test results.
Cumulative figures indicate:
İskeçe: 202 cases
Rhodope: 157 cases
Meriç: 163 cases
Last week, 3 new outbreaks were recorded in İskeçe and 4 in Rhodope.
Response Measures
The Ministry and the National Scientific Committee continue to implement disease management protocols, focusing on:
- Strict biosecurity measures on farms
- Strengthening and coordinating veterinary and inspection services
- Close cooperation with regional authorities
- Supporting affected farmers
