Scottish woman found dead in suitcase in Athens identified
Greek authorities have identified the woman whose body was found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in central Athens as 38-year-old Scottish national Elisabeth Jane Ross.
Police confirmed her identity through Interpol after matching her fingerprints with biometric records held by US authorities, where she had previously worked.
According to investigators, Ross arrived in Greece from Edinburgh on June 26 and initially stayed with friends in Keratsini. On July 15, she told them she was moving to stay with American friends in the Kypseli district of Athens and was not seen again.
Police are examining phone records after reports that someone continued using her mobile phone and allegedly sent messages to her father while impersonating her to prevent the family from reporting her missing.
Ross' body was discovered inside a suitcase on July 18 by a homeless man, who alerted authorities after noticing a strong odour.
An autopsy has not established the cause of death because of the advanced state of decomposition. Toxicology and other laboratory tests are ongoing as the investigation continues.
The UK Foreign Office said it is providing consular support to Ross' family, while Police Scotland confirmed it is assisting Greek authorities and supporting her relatives.
