Turkey's Minister of Justice Abdülhamit Gül and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu showed their supports to the mufti who was sentenced to 4-month prison for "authority extortion" by reacting to this judgment on their Twitter accounts.
Minister of Justice Abdülhamit Gül, pointed that "The prison sentence imposed on the elected mufti of Xanthi, Ahmet Mete, is a concrete example of the unlawfulness against the Turks in Western Thrace".
Çavuşoğlu on the other hand, said in a statement on his social media account, "In a country of the EU, an elected mufti is imprisoned for performing a funeral prayer. In what country of the world is a priest, a rabbi or another cleric deprived of this religious practice? Such an application has not been seen even in the worst regimes in the world".
