Rain causes problems in Athens, Evia

Most of the problems in Athens were concentrated in the northern and southern suburbs, with flooding being reported on coastal Poseidonos Avenue and other key thoroughfares. Police had to reroute vehicles via Vouliagmenis Avenue after closing the stretch of Poseidonos between Alimos and Kalamaki.
The Fire Service also responded to dozens of calls from residents, many of them in Kifissia in the north, asking for help to pump water out of basements and other properties.
In Evia, authorities were keeping a close eye on the Messapios River, which flows across the center of the island, as it started swelling on Wednesday evening under the constant rain, while a family with a young child had to be rescued by firefighters after their car became stuck in mud.
Authorities are advising motorists to exercise caution.
