Prison officer believed to be target of overnight explosion

Authorities in Thessaloniki are investigating a powerful explosion that rocked an apartment building in the Sykies suburb early Friday morning, with indications that the attack was directed at a prison officer residing in the building.

The explosion occurred shortly after 2 a.m., damaging the entrance of the building and injuring two people who were hit by shattered glass as they stepped outside in the aftermath. Both victims sustained only minor injuries, and no serious casualties were reported.

According to police sources, the device contained at least three kilograms of explosive material and had been strategically placed near the elevator shaft, directly beneath the apartment of the suspected target. Investigators believe the perpetrators drilled a hole in the shaft to install the device.

The bomb was reportedly triggered using a standard detonator and assembled with basic wiring. Specialists from the bomb disposal unit (TEEM) have collected samples from the scene for forensic analysis.

The Organized Crime Directorate is now leading the investigation, focusing on whether the prison officer had received any threats in recent weeks. Surveillance footage from the surrounding area is also being reviewed in an effort to identify those responsible.

The incident has raised concerns about potential links to organized crime or retaliation against law enforcement personnel.
