Print media in decline: Newspaper and magazine sales drop sharply in Greece in 2024

Print media in Greece experienced a significant decline in 2024, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

Newspaper sales fell by 3,489,116 copies, marking a 12.4% decrease compared to 2023. This follows a similar trend from 2023, which saw a 10.2% drop compared to 2022.

The downturn affected all newspaper categories:

Political newspapers dropped by 12.9%,

Economic newspapers fell by 13.8%,

Sports newspapers declined by 9.3%,

Other types experienced the sharpest fall at 29.2%.

Magazines faced a similar fate.
Sales dropped by 1,849,619 copies, a 14.9% decrease from the previous year, continuing the downward trend that saw a 20.7% drop in 2023 compared to 2022.

However, sports magazines bucked the trend, registering an impressive 41% increase in sales — the only category to see growth.

Meanwhile, the most severe losses among magazines were observed in:

Television magazines, down by 14.1%,

Miscellaneous magazines, down by 33.3%.
