Political turmoil in "NIKI": MP Nikos Papadopoulos suspended
According to an official statement, party leader Dimitris Natsios and the Permanent Parliamentary Council invoked Article 9.4 of the party's Charter, which allows for suspension in cases of serious misconduct. Papadopoulos, who represents the B' Thessaloniki constituency, will face the party’s Ethics Committee, which retains the authority to issue a final decision. He is expected to provide a formal defense.
The announcement highlights that Papadopoulos:
- Engaged in repeated divisive actions and disagreed with key decisions of the Parliamentary Group;
- Violated Article 9.1, attacking the President and other party officials with defamatory and inappropriate remarks, both privately and publicly;
- Rejected the party’s charter, congress, and leadership bodies.
Per Article 6.2, NIKI MPs are obligated to respect party principles and refrain from actions that undermine party unity. The statement further notes that:
“Given that Mr. Papadopoulos was elected thanks to the Movement’s essential support, particularly through his placement at the top of the party list in the June 2023 elections, we expect him to return his seat.”
This suspension underscores ongoing internal tensions within the nationalist and conservative “NIKI” party, raising questions about its future cohesion and parliamentary presence.
