Police warn public about phishing campaign

Police have warned the public about a phishing email campaign that falsely uses the names of the Hellenic Police and the country’s Europol National Unit in an attempt to defraud recipients.

According to a police statement, the fraudulent message appears to originate from the email address “enugr@enu.gr” and carries the subject line “Court order.” The email falsely claims that the recipient is implicated in a case involving child pornography and other serious offenses.

Authorities said the message uses the logos of the European Union and Europol, as well as the forged signature of a purported senior police official, to appear legitimate.

Police stressed that the email is entirely fraudulent and forms part of an effort by cybercriminals to deceive citizens and obtain illegal financial gain.

Police urge recipients not to respond to the message, to delete it immediately and to avoid opening any attachments, warning that they may contain malicious software.

Citizens are also encouraged to consult fraud-prevention advice available through the police’s online resources and the national cybercrime awareness platform, Cyber Alert, for guidance on recognizing and avoiding online scams.
