More than 16,000 traffic violations were recorded across Greece between February 20 and 23, 2026, following intensified nationwide checks by the Hellenic Police (ELAS).

The targeted inspections were carried out to ensure safe travel to and from major cities during the Carnival period and Clean Monday holiday.

Authorities said particular emphasis was placed on dangerous and antisocial driving behaviors linked to serious or fatal accidents, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, mobile phone use while driving, red-light violations and illegal overtaking.

A total of 1,973 patrol units inspected 73,632 vehicles, confirming 16,274 violations.

Speeding accounted for 3,062 violations, while 502 drivers were cited for driving under the influence of alcohol—together making up nearly 22% of all recorded offenses.

Other violations included failure to wear seat belts (498), not wearing helmets (421), driving without a license (388), lack of valid vehicle inspection (309), red-light violations (157) and illegal maneuvers (103), among thousands of additional infractions.

Police said checks will continue in an effort to reduce traffic accidents and improve road safety nationwide.
