Parliament faces key votes over MPs’ immunity

Parliament has entered an intensifying cycle of special procedures, marked by critical meetings and upcoming votes, as scrutiny deepens over the OPEKEPE farm subsidy case.

Lawmakers are currently examining two case files, along with a third proceeding on a separate legal track, while officials signal additional files may follow.

One of the case files, requesting the lifting of parliamentary immunity for 11 ruling New Democracy lawmakers, has already been reviewed by the Ethics Committee during a session last week.

The plenary is now expected to set a date to debate and decide, through an open vote, on the request submitted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

A second case file involving two additional lawmakers is still pending before the Ethics Committee, which is expected to convene shortly after Sunday to issue its recommendation.

It remains unclear whether the plenary will address both cases in a single session or hold separate debates. Parliamentary sources said a special session could be scheduled as early as next week.

Meanwhile, a third case file concerning former government officials is proceeding under the law on ministerial responsibility. Lawmakers are reviewing the material confidentially to determine whether a preliminary investigation committee should be established.

Parliamentary officials expect such a proposal soon, requiring at least 30 signatures and triggering a debate followed by a secret ballot vote.
