In February 2025, the General Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace reported a troubling rise in traffic violations. During this month, 10,726 violations were detected during traffic inspections in the region. Unfortunately, these violations contributed to 17 traffic accidents, resulting in 2 fatalities, 1 serious injury, and 18 minor injuries.
Main Causes of Accidents
The most common traffic violations leading to accidents included:
- Incorrect overtaking,
- Failure to yield,
- Ignoring traffic signs,
- Distracted driving, and
- Driving in the opposite direction.
Details of Traffic Violations
The monthly report provided a breakdown of the most frequent violations detected:
- 1,675 instances of speeding,
- 288 cases of failure to wear seat belts,
- 153 instances of driving in the wrong direction,
- 100 cases of using mobile phones while driving,
- 99 violations of not wearing helmets (for motorcycle riders),
- 78 cases of driving under the influence,
- 44 traffic sign violations,
- 28 cases of worn-out tires,
- 11 cases of dangerous overtaking,
- 9 instances of "weaving" through traffic,
- 7 priority violations.
Authorities issued fines and penalties as required, aiming to curb the rising number of traffic-related incidents in the region.
