One arrest for wildfire on Naxos

A man has been arrested by the authorities as the person responsible for a wildfire that broke out on the island of Naxos on Wednesday, according to the alternate spokesperson of the Fire Brigade, Nikos Pastras.

He explained that a local man was arrested and charged with arson through negligence, while adding that a 30-year-old man who confessed to causing a fire while carrying out agricultural work in Nigrita, Serres on Tuesday will be led before a Public Prosecutor

Pastras referred to three "dangerous" fires, as he described them, that occurred earlier on Wednesday in Markopoulo, Naxos and Karystos, Evia noting that firefighters and the Civil Protection forces "made great efforts to deal with them in time, before they spread and threaten lives, homes and forests".

He also urged the public to be exceptionally careful as the weather conditions this week are extremely unfavourable due to drought, high temperatures and winds with gusts of up to 8 Beaufort, conditions that are ideal for the rapid spread of fires, making it difficult for the Fire Brigade to deal with them.
