New law restricts campervan parking — Blow to alternative tourism in Greece

GREECE LIMITS FREEDOM OF CAMPER TOURISM

A new regulation under Law 5170/2025, passed in January, is causing widespread concern among campervan owners and renters in Greece. The law prohibits motorhomes — both self-propelled and towed — from parking in public spaces for more than 24 hours, even in legal roadside or municipal parking spots. The measure applies to all vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons and is grounded in Greece’s Road Traffic Code.

PRIVATE PARKING ALSO TIGHTLY CONTROLLED

Even private landowners are facing restrictions. Only one campervan is allowed per property — exceeding this limit or hosting friends with additional vehicles can lead to fines of €300 per violation. Owners argue the rule severely curtails their freedom and effectively discourages budget-friendly, alternative travel.

ONLY CAMPING SITES NOW LEGAL – BUT NOT ENOUGH

Under the new law, organized campsites are now the only legal overnight parking option. However, these are limited in number and often operate only in the summer, leaving winter travelers with few choices.

OUT OF STEP WITH EUROPEAN PRACTICES

The restrictions clash with norms in most EU countries, where travelers enjoy access to thousands of “camper stops” offering basic amenities like water, electricity, and sewage without requiring full campsite stays.

TOURISM INDUSTRY WORRIED

Tourism experts warn that the law could deter European visitors who travel by campervan, potentially reducing tourist numbers and local spending in rural areas. Small towns without hotels — but which benefit from campervan visitors patronizing taverns, shops, and gas stations — are especially at risk.

As discontent grows among Greek and foreign travelers alike, many are calling for revisions or clearer implementation guidelines to preserve the appeal of mobile tourism in Greece.
