New Democracy faces tensions over Tempe probe vote

Greece’s ruling New Democracy party is grappling with internal unease ahead of a secret parliamentary vote on whether to launch a preliminary investigation into former transport minister Kostas Karamanlis over the 2023 Tempe train tragedy.

Despite holding a majority with 155 seats, several New Democracy lawmakers have expressed reservations about the probe, questioning whether Karamanlis bears legal responsibility. Concerns have emerged about possible defections during the confidential vote.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis indirectly addressed the issue, warning that opposition deputies would share the blame if the investigation is blocked — a remark seen as revealing doubts over internal party discipline.

Opposition parties, including PASOK, have rejected the government’s proposal for a limited inquiry on misdemeanor charges. They insist on felony-level accountability, while SYRIZA and New Left are negotiating a joint proposal for a broader investigation. A key disagreement remains over whether Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis should be included.

The vote mirrors a prior instance involving former minister Christos Triantopoulos, where ruling party MPs showed similar reluctance. With the ballot being secret, the outcome could expose dissent within New Democracy and shape the narrative of political accountability surrounding the Tempe rail disaster.
