Murder attempt shocks Serres

A 55-year-old man accused of attempting to burn his estranged wife alive in the city of Serres in northern Greece was ordered into pretrial detention after testifying before judicial authorities on Friday.

Prosecutors charged him with attempted murder and arson after he allegedly doused his 37-year-old wife with gasoline inside their home.

The suspect denied intending to harm her, claiming he only wanted to pressure her into agreeing to a divorce.

Police intervened following a distress call from the suspect’s mother-in-law, who lives in the same house. A subsequent search uncovered a cache of weapons and drugs, leading to additional charges. The man reportedly expressed remorse but remains in custody.
