Kathimerini: Israel proposes air defense systems for Greek Islands

The newspaper reported that Israel has offered Athens the long-discussed "Spyder All-in-One" air defense system, along with additional systems tailored to the complex geography of the Greek islands.
As part of this proposal, Israel also suggested laser-based defense systems that could serve as counter-drone measures. The Hellenic Armed Forces are said to be evaluating the offer.
Furthermore, Israeli companies reportedly proposed high-tech “killer drones” that are battery-powered, capable of collecting data, and can autonomously respond to potential threats. These drones could be easily operated even on small, uninhabited islets.
The report also noted that the European Union’s plan to establish a “drone wall” along its external borders by 2027 has been welcomed by Athens. However, Greece expressed its view that the Turkish defense industry should not be involved in the project.
Despite opposition from Greece, France, and the Greek Cypriot Administration, Germany, Spain, and Italy reportedly support Türkiye’s inclusion, citing Ankara’s significant experience in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology and its contribution to NATO’s deterrent capabilities.
The article also highlighted Greece’s efforts to modernize its outdated air defense systems and deepen cooperation with Israel in the UAV sector.
