Heavy rain and storms sweep across Greece as temperatures drop sharply

Greece is set for a day of widespread rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds on Tuesday, October 7, with severe weather expected in the eastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands, according to meteorological forecasts.

Storms are forecast to be locally intense in parts of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, easing slightly by midday but likely returning in the evening. Rain and isolated thunderstorms are also expected in Thrace, the northern Aegean, Ionian Islands, western Central Greece, the Peloponnese, eastern mainland, the Sporades, Evia, the Cyclades, and Crete.

In Crete and occasionally in the Sporades, rainfall may become locally heavy, raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Light snow may fall in mountainous parts of central and northern Greece.

Temperature drop across the country

Temperatures will be unseasonably low, with forecasted ranges as follows:

Western Macedonia: 5–14°C

Rest of Macedonia & Thrace: 8–19°C

Thessaly: 8–21°C

Epirus: 8–19°C

Other mainland regions: 11–22°C

Ionian Islands: 13–19°C

Aegean Islands: 15–21°C

Crete & Dodecanese: 15–24°C

Strong winds in both seas

Strong northwesterly winds will affect much of the Ionian Sea, reaching 6–7 Beaufort, with gusts exceeding 70 km/h. In the Aegean Sea, winds will blow from the northwest at 5–6 Beaufort, while the southern Aegean may see westerly winds up to 7 Beaufort, also with gusts over 70 km/h.

⚠️ Travel and safety advisory

Authorities urge caution for travelers and residents, especially in island and coastal areas, due to the risk of stormy seas, flooding, and wind damage. Ferry schedules may be disrupted, and drivers should take extra care in areas with reduced visibility and slippery roads.
