Health minister proposes plan to reduce wait times at EOPYY pharmacies

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis unveiled a plan to reduce wait times at state-run pharmacies (EOPYY, the National Organization for Healthcare Services Provision) by distributing certain high-cost medications through local pharmacies, hiring additional pharmacists and expanding a home-delivery program for patients with chronic illnesses.

The announcement follows an incident Tuesday morning when a downtown EOPYY pharmacy on Alexandras Avenue, which provides high-cost pharmaceuticals, including for cancer patients, failed to open due to staff absences. Georgiadis called the incident “shameful” and pledged an investigation.

“I personally commit to ensuring incidents like the unacceptable delays at the Alexandras Avenue pharmacy are not repeated,” Georgiadis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, apologizing to affected patients. “We must find solutions to end this unnecessary suffering.”

The plan will allow select medications for serious illnesses, including cancer and multiple sclerosis, to be dispensed at neighborhood pharmacies. A pilot home-delivery program for conditions like cystic fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension, launched in 2024, will expand nationwide in 2025.
