Gynecologist sentenced to 73 years for serial rapes of patients
A 69-year-old gynecologist has been found guilty by a court on the island of Rhodes of multiple charges of sexual assault and rape of female patients during medical examinations.
The court convicted him on nine counts of rape and other cases of indecent assault, while acquitting him on one charge. The jury rejected his request for leniency due to his previous clean record and sentenced him to 73 years and nine months in prison, with no suspension. He will serve at least 20 years before being eligible for parole. Additionally, the court imposed a two-year ban on him practicing medicine.
The case, which was brought to trial in March 2022, involves crimes under both the old and new criminal codes.
The case began in August 2020 after a 55-year-old patient filed a complaint, leading to 21 total accusations from other patients. The alleged crimes occurred between 2014 and 2020 at a Rhodes hospital during medical examinations.
The suspect denied all charges.
