Greece says preparations for 2027 EU presidency ahead of schedule

Greek Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou said Thursday that Greece would be “ready earlier than any other Greek presidency” for its upcoming presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2027.

Speaking at a regular briefing for diplomatic correspondents, Zochiou said preparations began unusually early, starting in early 2025, with support from Greece’s Permanent Representation to the EU and an interministerial task force established later that year.

The Office of the Greek Presidency was officially created in November 2025 to coordinate and oversee all organisational aspects of the presidency, including informal EU summits and ministerial meetings scheduled to take place in Greece in 2027.

Ambassador Stylianos Chourmouziadis, a veteran diplomat who previously served during Greece’s 2014 EU presidency, was appointed to head the office.

Zochiou said the political priorities of the Greek presidency are still being formulated and will be announced at a later stage in line with EU practice.

She also referred to ongoing European Union discussions on strengthening the bloc’s mutual assistance clause under Article 42.7, saying recent developments in Cyprus and wider geopolitical instability had highlighted the need for a stronger operational framework.
