Greece ranks 25th in Global Democracy Index
Greece has been ranked 25th worldwide in the 2024 Democracy Index by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), maintaining its status as a "full democracy" with a score of 8.07 out of 10. The country surpasses nations such as the United States, Italy, and France in democratic performance.
However, despite being upgraded to the full democracy category just last year, Greece has dropped five positions compared to 2023.
The country performed exceptionally well in pluralism, receiving a perfect score of 10. However, it scored lower in:
- Government functioning: 6.79 (lowest score)
- Political participation: 7.22 (second-lowest score)
- Political culture: 7.5
- Civil liberties: 8.82
The global state of democracy appears to be at its weakest since the index's inception, with many countries experiencing a decline in their rankings. In Europe, France was downgraded from a full democracy to a flawed democracy, while Romania also suffered a downgrade due to allegations of Russian interference and election financing violations.
Elsewhere, South Korea fell out of the full democracy category following a crisis triggered by the imposition and swift repeal of martial law. Meanwhile, Norway remains the world's most democratic country, securing the top spot with a score of 9.81.
Notably, while Greece maintains its full democracy status, countries like France and Romania have seen declines due to internal political turmoil. The United States remains classified as a "flawed democracy", with Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory seen as part of a global backlash against establishment leaders. The next major test for global democracy will be how these newly elected leaders govern in the coming years.
