Greece backs peace initiatives, upholds sovereignty, FM says

Greece consistently supports initiatives promoting peace and multilateral diplomacy, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said in an interview with Ethnikos Kirikas. Referring to the U.S.-proposed Board of Peace, he noted that Greece participates as a founding member while acting within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2803, which aims to foster peace in Gaza.

On territorial waters, Gerapetritis stressed that expanding Greece’s jurisdiction to 12 nautical miles is an inalienable right rooted in national sovereignty, to be exercised unilaterally at a time chosen by the state. He emphasized that dialogue with Turkiye focuses on stability and good-neighbourly relations, while sovereignty issues remain non-negotiable, with the only formal dispute concerning the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean EEZ and continental shelf.

Regarding Ukraine, he said Greece supports initiatives to end the war, safeguard Ukrainian sovereignty, and provide security guarantees. Gerapetritis added that Greek foreign policy rests on “stable and unified red lines,” including adherence to international law, multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and defense of attacked states, leaving “no room for compromise.”
