Greece has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for October 2026, marking the second time it has held the rotating position during its 2025–2026 term as a non-permanent member.

Greece was elected to the Security Council for the 2025–2026 period and previously held the presidency in May 2025, according to a report published by Greek newspaper Empros on October 1.

MARITIME SECURITY AND FREEDOM OF NAVIGATION AMONG PRIORITIES

Maritime security, particularly the protection of freedom of navigation, is expected to feature prominently during Greece’s presidency.

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has identified freedom of navigation as a central priority for the country, linking it to the security of international supply chains.

The issue was also a focus during Greece’s previous presidency in May 2025, when the Security Council held a high-level open debate on strengthening maritime security through international cooperation.

UN SECRETARY-GENERAL SELECTION PROCESS

Greece’s October presidency also coincides with the process of selecting the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a central role in recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, which formally appoints the secretary-general.

Greece’s presidency gives it responsibility for coordinating the Council’s work and presiding over its meetings during October, amid continued international attention to maritime security and the UN’s leadership transition.
