Former PM Tsipras to present memoir ‘Ithaki’ on Dec 3
Former prime minister and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras will present his new book, “Ithaki” (Ithaca), on December 3 at the Pallas Theater in Athens, in an event organized by his publisher, Gutenberg. The book, priced at 28 euros, will be released on November 24.
The audiobook version was recorded at BookVoice Studios. “Most of it was recorded in the voice of actor Aimilios Chilakis. Some parts, including the prologue and epilogue, were narrated by me,” Tsipras revealed. “Rereading and narrating my texts, I felt the same– perhaps even stronger – emotions as when I first wrote them,” he said.
Spanning more than 700 pages, “Ithaki” traces Tsipras’ political journey, from his early activism in the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) to his leadership of SYRIZA and his tenure as prime minister during the peak of Greece’s debt crisis. The book also reflects on the years since, including internal divisions within SYRIZA, offering Tsipras’ personal perspective on the decisions, challenges, and responsibilities he faced in office.
Gutenberg has described the work as a “political thriller” that blends historical documentation with personal reflections. The title references Homer’s “Odyssey,” symbolizing a journey of return, renewal, and purpose.
Gutenberg has not confirmed whether the book will be released in English.
Tsipras, who resigned from parliament last month, is widely expected to form a new center-left political party in early 2026.
