Explosion in Athens’ Plaka shatters windows as hotel guests flee in panic
Security camera footage has captured the moment a powerful explosion struck an old building in Plaka, central Athens, on Friday morning, sending shockwaves through the surrounding area and prompting hotel guests to flee.
The blast occurred on Lysikratous Street, near its junction with Amalias Avenue. Footage from a nearby hotel shows the explosion and the immediate aftermath, including windows shattering as the force of the blast swept through the area.
The recording captures a loud bang followed by visible damage to windows in the vicinity.
Moments later, hotel guests can be seen running away from the building in apparent fear as they attempted to move to safety.
ONE PERSON LIGHTLY INJURED
The explosion caused significant disruption in the area. One passerby sustained minor injuries, while two women were reportedly trapped inside a neighboring building and were subsequently rescued.
The two women were taken to hospital for first aid.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion. The incident also caused damage to nearby buildings, with emergency services responding to the scene.
