The Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) has issued a public warning regarding the West Nile virus, urging citizens to take preventive measures against mosquito bites, particularly during the summer and autumn months.

In a statement released by EODY, the agency noted that the virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites, appears annually in many countries and has been recorded in Greece almost every year since 2010.

Based on past data, health authorities anticipate new cases to emerge during the summer of 2025. As such, EODY has shared recommendations for public protection.

Over the past 15 years, Greece has reported a total of 2,088 cases of West Nile virus. Among these, 1,471 cases involved symptoms affecting the central nervous system, and 292 people have died as a result of the infection.
