Elena Karageorgopoulou leaves Course of Freedom, becomes independent MP

Karageorgopoulou submitted her resignation letter to the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, which will be formally read during a plenary session. According to parliamentary rules, Course of Freedom still retains the minimum number of MPs required to continue functioning as a parliamentary group.

In her letter, she explained her decision: “My choice to continue as an independent MP results from a different political assessment regarding the exercise of my parliamentary role and the need to strengthen effective parliamentary oversight. Over the course of my parliamentary work, political differences emerged regarding direction and functioning, leading me to this institutional decision. This is not an act of confrontation, but a political differentiation concerning parliamentary orientation and the way I carry out my role. I remain in Parliament to serve the public mandate responsibly, exercising active and accountable opposition.”

Currently, center-right New Democracy holds the largest number of MPs at 156, followed by socialist PASOK with 33 and SYRIZA with 25. In recent years, ND has lost two MPs to independents, SYRIZA has lost ten — two of whom joined PASOK — while the far-right Spartans lost nine MPs and Course of Freedom lost two.
