Macedonia and Thrace remain a central priority for the government, “not only for national reasons, but also for economic and social ones,” Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis underlined during a meeting in Thessaloniki on Wednesday, ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

The meeting, held at the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry building, was attended by Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios and Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia-Thrace Kostas Gioulekas.

According to AMNA, Hatzidakis stressed that the government’s commitment is reflected in the hundreds of projects currently underway in Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Thrace, and Thessaloniki, all designed to “accelerate development in Northern Greece.”

Interior Minister Livanios highlighted that the government is in close contact with local authorities and productivity bodies, gathering input that will help shape Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ policy speech and the new measures to be announced at the inauguration of the 89th TIF in the coming days.

For his part, Deputy Minister Gioulekas – whose contribution was praised by Hatzidakis – expressed satisfaction with the consistent cooperation with the government and the prime minister’s personal interest. He pointed to key infrastructure projects in the region, including the completed Thessaloniki Metro, the flyover currently under construction, and the Metro extension toward Kalamaria, expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, a lot of ground to cover, but we are moving ahead systematically,” Gioulekas said.
