Country to come to a halt tomorrow as unions announce 24-hour trike
The Confederation of Public Servants' Unions (ADEDY), the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), and the Militants Workers’ Union Front (PAME) have announced a 24-hour strike for Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The strike, prompted by wage increases and collective bargaining agreements, has been supported by federations of private teachers, construction workers, and various other professional unions. Public hospital employees and bank workers have also officially announced their participation.
Ships Will Remain Docked
The Panhellenic Maritime Federation (PNO), following the announcement by GSEE, has unanimously decided to join the nationwide strike, meaning ships will remain docked at Greek ports on Wednesday.
Hospital Doctors Join Strike
Hospital doctors have also declared their participation in the general strike. The Federation of Hospital Doctors' Associations of Greece (OENGE) outlined their reasons for the strike, highlighting that 49% of patients cannot find a doctor, and 24% are unable to undergo necessary tests. The statement emphasized that public health institutions have shrunk by 40% since 2009, with staff aging and exhausted, while private healthcare groups are making "crazy" profits.
