Banks: Most deposits in Greece do not exceed €1,000

In Greece, deposit holders number 31.8 million, but the majority keep very small balances. According to 2024 data from the Hellenic Deposit Guarantee Fund (TEKE), seven out of ten depositors hold less than €1,000, while fewer than two in ten have deposits over €5,000.

Although small depositors make up the largest share, deposits up to €1,000 account for just 1.3% of the total. Deposits up to €50,000 represent 40.2% of the total.

At the end of 2024, total eligible deposits stood at €208.64 billion, up 4.4% from 2023 (€199.81 billion). Over the five-year period 2019–2024, eligible deposits rose by 46%. Guaranteed deposits reached €142.9 billion, 68.5% of the total, marking a 2.1% annual increase and a 29% rise over five years.

TEKE insures deposits up to €100,000 and covers all Greek banks (commercial and cooperative), as well as Snappi, the digital bank licensed by the ECB on June 28, 2024. Eligible deposits also include those held in Greek bank branches abroad and branches of non-EU banks in Greece. Branches of banks headquartered in EU member states are instead covered by their home country’s guarantee schemes. The Deposits and Loans Fund is excluded from TEKE due to its special legal status.
