Officials of the Supreme Court of Greece expressed their concern about the envelope containing an explosive substance sent to the Courthouse in Thessaloniki yesterday.

"We express our deep regret and concern over the targeting of judicial officials," the statement released by the relevant authorities said.

The statement emphasised that electronic control systems should be established and operated in order to identify the contents of envelopes arriving at courthouses in the country, and stated that this work will contribute to the smooth access of citizens to judicial services.

Justice Minister Yorgos Floridis, in a television programme, acknowledged that the security deficit at the Palace of Justice in Thessaloniki is serious and noted that there are problems with inspections.

Floridis emphasised that the fact that the explosive substance in the envelope reached the office of the president of the court showed the problem in the inspections and stated that the entire security system in the courthouse was reviewed.

An envelope containing an explosive substance sent to the courthouse in Thessaloniki yesterday was destroyed by bomb disposal experts in a controlled manner.

It was reported in the news that the envelope containing a lethal amount of explosives was prepared in such a way that it would explode upon opening.
