27-year-old arrested after 25-year-old woman found dead in Igoumenitsa

A 25-year-old woman was found dead in Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece, while a 27-year-old man found injured nearby allegedly initially told authorities that they had both been attacked by four masked assailants. Police later identified inconsistencies in his account, and he reportedly admitted several hours later that he had killed the woman.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, September 20, near the beginning of a cycle path in Igoumenitsa. At around 9:40 p.m., a passerby found the woman unconscious and alerted authorities. Police and emergency medical services arrived at the scene, which was cordoned off for investigation.

Man initially reported alleged attack
The woman was found with what police described as a knife wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old man, who was found injured a short distance away, was taken to Igoumenitsa Hospital. During his transfer, he reportedly told police that four unidentified people wearing masks had attacked both him and the 25-year-old woman.

Investigators from the Igoumenitsa Security Directorate continued examining his account and reportedly found inconsistencies in his statements.

According to reporting by ERTnews, approximately three hours after the incident, the man allegedly admitted that he was responsible for the woman's death.

Authorities investigate circumstances and motive
According to police sources cited by ERTnews, the 27-year-old reportedly said that an argument had taken place between him and the woman, whom he described as his former partner.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged motive for the attack.

The knife believed to have been used in the killing was reportedly recovered and seized after the suspect indicated where he had discarded it while leaving the scene.

A case has been filed against the 27-year-old on charges including intentional homicide, domestic violence-related offences and violations of weapons legislation.

A forensic examination is expected to provide further evidence regarding the circumstances of the woman's death, while the police investigation remains ongoing.

The allegations against the 27-year-old have not yet been established by a court.
