Unruly passenger forces emergency landing in Athens on Gatwick-Hurghada flight

An Egypt-bound flight from London had to make an emergency landing in Athens on Wednesday due to unruly conduct by a passenger.

Wizz Air W95777, which was en route from Gatwick to the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, was forced to land at Athens after the passenger, who had been drinking for most of the flight according to eyewitnesses, became unruly, swearing at flight crew who had asked her to calm down.

Flight tracking apps show the flight taking off 20 minutes late from Gatwick at 16.26 (Greek time) on Wednesday afternoon with a scheduled arrival of 21.25 local time after a five-hour flight.

Around two-and-half-hours later, just as the flight crossed into Greek airspace, it continued southwards towards Egypt before making a U-turn and heading back towards Athens.

The aircraft subsequently continued its flight to its destination, arriving two hours later behind schedule.
