New euro banknotes on the way
The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially announced a public design competition for the next generation of euro banknotes, marking a new phase in the redesign of the common European currency.
Targeting graphic designers based in the European Union, the competition aims to showcase the most creative and representative designs that will adorn euro notes in the coming years. Following broad consultation with experts and the general public, the ECB’s Governing Council has selected two overarching themes: "European Culture" and "Rivers and Birds."
The "European Culture" theme will focus on the shared cultural heritage and key historical figures that have shaped Europe’s identity. Meanwhile, "Rivers and Birds" will highlight the continent’s rich biodiversity and the resilience of its natural ecosystems. The ECB has already outlined specific design patterns to guide artists working within these themes.
The competition will unfold in two phases. In the first phase, interested designers must submit their applications by August 18, 2025, at 12:00 CET, meeting the eligibility criteria detailed in the official call. Selection will be based on qualifications and past work.
Those chosen will move on to the second phase, where they will submit actual design proposals. An independent jury will review the submissions and select up to five finalists for each theme. The public will then be invited to provide feedback on the shortlisted designs.
The ECB’s Governing Council is expected to make a final decision on the winning design by the end of 2026, with the rollout of the new banknotes to follow once production is complete.
"The euro is more than just a currency – it symbolizes European unity and diversity. Through this competition, we invite designers across Europe to help shape the future of our banknotes so they reflect our shared cultural identity and natural heritage," said ECB President Christine Lagarde.
