The Italian lakeside village of Varenna has introduced fines of up to €200 for tourists who walk through public areas shirtless or wearing swimwear, as local authorities step up efforts to curb the effects of overtourism.
Under the new regulations, visitors found wearing bikinis, swimsuits or walking bare-chested outside designated beach areas or boat trips face fines ranging from €50 to €200. The measures are intended to preserve public decorum and improve the quality of life for local residents.
The municipality has also imposed additional restrictions, including limits on the size of guided tour groups and a ban on tour guides using loudspeakers in the village's narrow streets.
Officials say the new rules are designed to balance tourism with the needs of the local community as visitor numbers continue to rise.
