Greece backs European leaders’ statement on Greenland

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday that Greece fully supports a joint statement on Greenland issued by seven European leaders, stressing respect for sovereignty and collective security.

In a post on X, Mitsotakis said NATO allies should remain committed to dialogue, mutual respect and international law. The statement was signed by the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The declaration underlines that Arctic security is a key European and transatlantic priority and affirms that decisions concerning Greenland rest solely with Denmark and the people of Greenland.

It also stresses that security in the Arctic should be pursued collectively with NATO allies, including the United States, in line with the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders.
