Greece ranks as one of the top food-wasting countries in the European Union, with an estimated 200 kilograms of food wasted per person each year, according to recent EU data.

Across the EU, approximately 58 million tons of food are wasted annually. Households are the largest contributors, responsible for around half of this total, with the rest coming from other parts of the food supply chain, including production, retail, and food services.

Greece’s per capita food waste is significantly above the EU average of 131 kg per person. Only Cyprus (300 kg) and Denmark (250 kg) report higher figures.

In contrast, several countries are setting a better example, with Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Hungary, and Bulgaria all recording less than 100 kg of food waste per person annually.

The data highlights growing concerns over food waste in Europe and underscores the need for stronger policies and public awareness to address the issue—particularly in high-waste countries like Greece.
