Former Prime Minister George Papandreou was unanimously re-elected as General Rapporteur on Democracy during Tuesday's session of the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

"The renewal of my mandate is a great honour and recognition of my dedicated work to strengthen democracy, and allows me to continue to promote the Council of Europe's commitment to democracy, civic participation, the rule of law and human rights, at a time when these values are facing significant challenges," Papandreou said in a statement.
