EU gives Greece until November 2 to improve OPEKEPE action plan
The European Commission has given Greece a deadline of November 2 to submit an improved action plan concerning the operation of OPEKEPE, the agency responsible for distributing EU agricultural subsidies.
In a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) on Friday, European Commission spokesperson for Budget and Administration Balazs Ujvari confirmed the deadline, emphasizing that Greek authorities have so far met the Commission’s requirements. He also noted that there is no current reason to suspend EU funding to Greece.
Ujvari was responding to media reports about a European Commission letter sent to Greek officials in September 2024, which had been leaked to the press. The letter outlined ongoing concerns about OPEKEPE's functioning and called for stronger corrective measures.
Initially, Greece was expected to respond by October 2, but the deadline was extended by a month due to the August holiday period.
The European Commission continues to monitor the situation and expects the updated action plan to address the operational issues identified in previous communications.
