ECHR’s pushback ruling shadows Migration Commissioner’s Athens visit

New European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner is set to visit Athens next week on Thursday, with key discussions on the new migration and asylum pact and migrant repatriations.
His visit, though preplanned, comes shortly after the European Court of Human Rights condemned Greece for pushbacks at its border with Turkiye, including the controversial case of Ayse Erdogan.
Brunner is expected to meet with Greek government officials and discuss the implications of this ruling, emphasizing that migration management must align with EU and international human rights laws. The EU will also focus on implementing an independent monitoring mechanism for border control compliance, aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability.
The new migration pact is expected to take effect by summer 2026.
