Costs and discrimination drive EU citizens to consider leaving Germany

An increasing number of European Union citizens are considering leaving Germany due to rising living costs, housing challenges, discrimination, and a lack of social integration, according to a report cited by Polish broadcaster TVP World on Wednesday.

For the first time in 15 years, more EU nationals are leaving Germany than arriving, the broadcaster reported, referencing a study commissioned by Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration, Natalie Pawlik.

The study found that 35% of surveyed EU citizens living in Germany are thinking about leaving the country, while 13% have already taken concrete steps toward departure.

Housing costs emerged as the most frequently cited concern, with 42% of respondents saying they are considering leaving due to expensive accommodation. Another 36% pointed to the rising overall cost of living.

The report also highlighted challenges related to social integration. Nearly 39% of participants said they do not feel fully integrated into German society, while between 15% and 28% reported experiencing some form of discrimination.

Additional difficulties mentioned by respondents included language barriers and problems with having their professional qualifications recognized in Germany.

The findings underscore growing concerns among EU citizens about economic pressures and social inclusion in one of Europe’s largest economies.
